Did You Know That We Can Microchip Your Pet?

At Shepherds' Vets, we strongly recommend microchipping. Although it doesn't guarantee that your pet would be returned in the unfortunate event that he/she was lost or stolen, it does guarantee that if found, you can prove that you are the owner, and it also means that you would hopefully be reunited sooner.

The microchip itself is the size of a small grain of rice, and in dogs and cats, it is usually implanted under the loose skin on the back of the neck, between the shoulder blades. Each microchip holds a unique identity number and if the pet was scanned with a specialised reader, the microchip would be detected and the unique number would be recorded. This identity number could then be matched to the owner's contact details thanks to the holding of such information on a nationwide database.

We recommend that pets are microchipped as early as possible, and find that many owners decide to have them done at the time of primary vaccinations because whereas identity collars and tags can become caught or removed if your pet was lost or stolen, microchipping identifies your pet permanently and effectively, as long as you keep your contact details up to date.

What about neutering?

We recommend that all non-breeding animals are neutered. In females this is referred to as spaying and in males it is castration. This procedure ensures that your pet will not be able to become pregnant or make any other animal pregnant. As well as this, there are many other reasons why it is a good idea to have your pet neutered.

  • You do not need to let your pet have a litter before they are neutered
  • Cost depends upon species, size, sex and age of animal

If you would like any further information on our neutering service or have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the surgery on 01562 822986.
